Some people believe that the government should set up free libraries in every city. Others, however, think that this is a waste of money as people can use the Internet at home to get information.

Libraries have always been an essential resource for people to access information and knowledge. However, with the advent of the internet, some people argue that the government should not set up free libraries in every city as it would be a waste of money since people can easily access information at home. In my opinion, while the internet has undoubtedly made accessing information easier, libraries still play an essential role in providing access to resources and knowledge to people, particularly those who cannot afford it.

Firstly, free libraries are an excellent resource for people who cannot afford internet access or computers at home. In many parts of the world, particularly in developing countries, people do not have access to technology, and libraries provide them with a means of accessing information and knowledge. Additionally, not everyone has the skills to navigate the internet or access reliable sources of information. Libraries, on the other hand, are staffed by trained professionals who can assist people in finding the information they need.

Secondly, libraries provide a space for people to study, work and collaborate. Many people, particularly students, use libraries as a quiet and comfortable space to study, work on assignments, or conduct research. Moreover, libraries often provide access to specialized resources, such as academic journals or reference materials, that people may not be able to access elsewhere. Therefore, libraries play a crucial role in supporting education and research.

However, in the digital age, libraries need to adapt to remain relevant. Libraries can supplement their physical collections with online resources and digital services. For example, libraries can offer access to e-books, audio books, and online databases, providing patrons with a broader range of resources. Moreover, libraries can provide training and support to help people develop their digital literacy skills, making it easier for them to access information online.

In conclusion, while the internet has undoubtedly made accessing information easier, libraries still play a vital role in providing access to resources and knowledge, particularly for those who cannot afford it. However, libraries need to adapt and expand their services to remain relevant in the digital age. Therefore, I believe that the government should set up free libraries in every city, but these libraries need to evolve to provide patrons with a range of physical and digital resources.
